Page Turners: May 2022

Page Turners will be reading The Indigo Girl by Natasha Boyd this month. This work of historical fiction is based on the life of one Eliza Lucas and takes place between 1739 and 1744. Eliza was a teenager at the time and, out of the necessity to raise money to support her father’s military ambitions, she planted indigo seeds and introduced commercial-grade indigo as a North American crop. This was not an easy task but she perse- vered in her efforts and indigo dye “became one of the largest exports out of South Carolina, an export that laid the foundation for the incredible wealth of several South- ern families who still live on today. Although largely overlooked by historians, the accomplishment of Eliza Lucas influenced the course of US history. When she passed away in 1793, President George Washington served as a pallbearer at her funeral.” The book should provide for lively discussions in all three groups as it touches on “romance, intrigue, forbidden friendships, and political and financial threats”… that weave together “to form the story of a remarkable young woman whose actions were before their time.”

Our book club consists of three groups of approxi- mately 10 members each. One group meets the fourth Monday afternoon of the month, and the other two groups meet the fourth Thursday afternoon of the month. If you have an interest in joining, you can contact Steve and Ann Morris at samwrsi@cox.net regarding the Thursday groups and me regarding the Monday afternoon group at
