This Month’s Selection—Page Turners
members are reading Isola by Allegra Good-man this month. The book is described as “… a
historical fiction novel based on the true story of Marguerite de la Rocque, a 16th-century
French noblewoman who was marooned on an island
off the coast of Canada with her lover and nurse.” It will be interesting to hear what members have to say about this book because the reviews that I read give very different opinions.
One reviewer says, “Goodman’s sweeping page-turner is at once historical and modern, intimate and
epic, personal and powerful.” But another reviewer says, “The book never rises above its simple
romance, survival, and injustice themes to teach us much about the history. We don’t learn much
about the times.” Differing views usually makes for good discussions!
Next Year’s Books—Every spring we begin the process of suggesting and voting for books to read
during our next “book club year.” (We still follow the old September-June schedule.) Members
suggest books for consideration and give short summaries. We usually have about 24 books from which
we vote to select the nine we will read as a group. It is very interesting to see all the different books suggested by our 40 members.
Membership—If you would like more information on Page Turners book club, please contact one of the
