Page Turners: April 2026

Book of the Month
Page Turners are reading Sebastian Barry’s novel Old God’s Time this month. Sebastian Barry (one of
my favorite authors) is an Irish novelist, playwright and poet. He was named Laureate for Irish fiction 2018-2021.
His many awards include being twice short-listed and twice long-listed for the Man Booker Prize and
being the only author to have twice won the Costa Book of the Year Award. On reading some reviews
of this book I find the following sentence gives a good summation:
“A murder investigation leads a retired policeman to confront his past in a stately, often
dreamlike novel about the impact of trauma on memory.”
Further, as we all consider how well our memory of events is still accurate, this book offers
something to consider:
“Ultimately, Old God’s Time is an at times woozy rendering of unstable memories and the difficulty
in telling your story as it disappears ‘into old God’s time,’ as well as a tribute to enduring love
and its ability to light up the dark.”
