Maintenance Committee: January 2026

Meet Your New Lead Maintenance Technician: Tom Shimkus!
The Niguel Shores Maintenance Committee extends congratulations to Tom Shimkus, who was recently pro- moted to Lead Maintenance
Technician! After 14 years Tom stepped into his new leadership role in late 2025.

Tom brings a wealth of experience, including previous employment at the Seiko Watch Company. A native of East- ern New Jersey, Tom grew up near Newark
with his three siblings—an older brother and a younger brother and sister. His heritage is rich,
with his father’s family hailing from Eastern Europe and his mother’s family from Lebanon. Music
runs deep in Tom’s life, a passion he inherited from his older brother, from whom he developed an
early love for the groundbreaking sounds of the 60s and 70s, counting bands like The Beatles and
Cream among his favorites. He played the trombone in his school band and marching band.

Tom’s technical skills stem from his father’s interest in and ability in engineering and mechanics.
He attended Technical School in New Jersey and, after his family moved west, continued his education in an
engineering program at El Camino College, an area well known for its exten-
sive aerospace and manufacturing. His love for his work at Niguel Shores comes from the daily
challenges. He enjoys the creative process of repairing things with the parts avail- able in the
maintenance shop.
Tom now lives nearby with his wife, Haruko. Together, they are avid outdoor enthusiasts, enjoying
hiking and camping in beautiful spots like Death Valley, Joshua Tree, and the Anza Borrego area.
We are fortunate to have Tom’s skill and commitment guiding our Maintenance Team and look forward
to his con- tinued contributions to keeping Niguel Shores beautiful!
