This month Page Turners book club members return to their regular monthly discussions of the top nine books selected from the 24 suggested. If you are curious about why our “book club year” runs September through June, it is because the club was started approximately 40 years ago by a group of Niguel Shores women who had small children in school and the school year at that time ran from September through June!
Now that bit of trivia is explained, this month we will dis- cussing The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife by Anna Johnson.
This book received the highest number of member votes and so it is appropriate that it is the first one we will read this year. The novel is the author’s debut and as one reviewer states it is “a warm, life- affirming debut about a zany case of mistaken identity that allows a lonely old man one last chance to be part of a family.”
Another reviewer states, “Only a brave author would take on topics like elder care, dementia, family breakdown, death, addiction, mental health and forgiveness in one book, let alone their debut novel … As soon as I started reading the first chapter, I could sense the respect and deep love the author has for our aged population.”
The book club consists of approximately 35 members divided into three groups. One group meets the fourth Mon- day afternoon of the month and the other two groups meet separately, the fourth Thursday afternoon of the month. If you would like more information, please contact one of the group coordinators: Lisa Buchner at lisabuchner47@gmail. com, Steve and Ann Morris at samwrsi@cox.net or myself at fozimec@cox.net. We always welcome new members.
