Page Turners: April 2024

Our selection this month is Ann Napolitano’s novel Dear Edward. I read this book when it first came out in 2020 and was the Barnes and Noble Book Club selection. In order to contribute to our book club discussion this month, I felt
that I needed to read it again and am so glad that I did.
This is the story of a young man who is the sole survivor of a plane crash that took all members of his family along with a host of very interesting characters who also perished in the crash. The author alternates between background information about the passengers on the plane prior to the crash and what is going on in Edward’s life after the crash.
In the words of the publisher: “Dear Edward is at once a transcendent coming of age story, a multidimensional portrait of an unforgettable cast of characters, and a breathtaking illustration of all the ways a broken heart learns to love again.” We are sure to have wonderful discussions of this beautiful book.
Now that it is spring, we begin the process of selecting the books that we will read next “book club year” (September through June). Members of all three groups suggest books and, prior to our June joint meeting, we each vote for nine books. The titles with the largest number of votes are the nine we read. Each of the three book club groups has the same number to suggest and we usually finish up with about 21-24 books from which to select the nine.
If you are thinking of joining a book club, we would be happy to answer any questions. You can reach me at fozimec@cox.net.
