Oreo Cookie Book Club – November 2011

The meeting of The Oreo Book Club turned really serious in its meeting on October 19 at the home of Dick Johns when it discussed the book Voltaire — A Life by Ian Davidson. John Hall led the discussion that covered the Age of Enlightenment in both Europe and in England, comparing and contrasting eminent philosophers and mathematicians of the period. Some felt Voltaire did not measure up, others disagreed. We talked about the Age of Enlightenment — what preceded it and what it led to in our own times. In fact the discussion grew so heated that some people forgot to eat their Oreo’s and were told they had to double down the next time. The next meeting will be on November 16 at the home of Mary Crowl to discuss The Forgotten Founding Father: Noah Webster’s Obsession and the Creation of an American Culture.
