Oreo Book Club – The Sultan’s Shadow by Christine Bird

Held at the home of Chafer and Phyllis Tezer on March 19, the group discussed the book The Favored Daughter by Fawzia Koofi. Lakshman Sehgal recommended this book because part of India and Afghanistan share an early history. The author of the book recounted the difficulties of life under the Taliban and the fierce infighting Afghan groups. Her courage in persisting in politics in spite of assignation threats was noted. The abuse of woman in Afghan culture was noted, though papered over by the author. The superiority of American and Western culture over tribal conduct codes was debated. The next meeting will be at the home of Rich Schwartz and we will discuss The Sultan’s Shadow by Christine Bird on the third Wednesday, April 16, at 1:30 p.m. We mourn the death of a second Club member, Gretchen Rask, who always was an intelligent and thoughtful voice in our meetings.
