The Really Serious Oreo Cookie Book Club met February 20 at the home of Rich Schwartz to discuss the book Red Dust by MaJian. Janet MacKaig recommended the book and led us down the dusty path of exploration along with the author’s solo adventure down the Old Silk Road and into the homes and lives of the villagers that lived in these rural outposts of contemporary China. We discover a people bound by narrow mores and fearful of moving outside their bounds. We also discover an author who is shallow and self-serving, one that moves us neither emotionally nor intellectually. We shall not visit him again.
For March the Club will be reading Rachel Maddow’s Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power. We will meet on March 20 at 1:30—location to be announced.
