Oreo Cookie Book Club – July 2012

The Really Serious Oreo Cookie Book Club met June 20 at the home of Diane Hearne where the book, Eisenhower—1956—Year of Danger by David Nichols, was discussed. Members had to reach back in their memories for their impressions of Eisenhower and the period of time discussed. The moral courage of Eisenhower in putting a stake in the heart of colonialism by France and England was noted. His views on the evils of the military/industrial complex and his staunch dealings with an aggressive Russia in the mid-east was noted. His relation with Dulles and the rest of his staff was reviewed. Eisenhower’s ego and his heart problems at the time of his reelection were considered.

The next meeting will be at the home of Rich Schwartz on July 18 and Waiting for Snow in Havana, recommended by Diane Hearne, will be discussed.
